Artistic approach
Since childhood, Tuan Vu has drawn the monsters that populate his nightmares. Having grown up in Vietnam during a troubled period, these monsters have haunted him throughout his days. It is through painting that he seeks to make sense of all that he has seen and experienced. Today, the artist questions the mysteries of the world and the humans who inhabit it. Inspired by Greek mythology, Tuan Vu's works abound with human and fantastic characters, such as nymphs and mermaids. Remnants of his childhood memories in Vietnam, palm trees are also scattered throughout his paintings. Flamboyant or bare, fragile or robust, these trees sometimes hint at the hidden meaning of the work.
Vibrant, colorful and playful at first glance, his works raise important issues of identity, inclusion and climate change. Without wanting to impose his vision, the artist invites the public to question themselves. He is part of a continuum of art history, sometimes winking at renowned painters such as Botticelli, Gaugin or Manet. Tuan Vu pays tribute to them while reappropriating their work and integrating it into his approach. In a palette of vibrant colors, Tuan Vu plays with our imagination, creating landscapes in which we get lost in thoughts and dreams.
